Leading learning? Ask yourself this question.

Leading learning across your school, district or network?

There’s one question I want to ask you.

And it’s a question we’ve been asking for years at Unleash Learning. It’s something I’m now starting to see being asked more these days.

I recently applied to run a workshop for the upcoming ACEL National Conference, as well as a few at other educational leadership conferences.

Yep, these conferences asked for the title and description of the workshop.

But they asked another question.

And if you’re working to advance teaching and learning across your school – in the era of overwhelm, I believe it’s an essential question to ask yourself, too.

What is it?

How will you engage the audience?

I haven’t spoken with the conference organisers to ask more about their intention behind this question on their applications, but I want to offer this….

In the era of overwhelm, time and attention are precious commodities.

That’s because in this new era, people are flooded with information like never before.  And there’s a million things competing for their attention.

In this new era, distraction is a new normal. Plus, the flood of information can cause people’s mental load, which in this new era is already full, to become overloaded.

Working to advance teaching and learning across your school or team – the “delivery of information” alone isn’t going to make that happen.

It’s the right kind of intentional and planned-for learner engagement that will.

And once you and your leadership team have an embedded approach for this kind of engagement and use it in:

  • your staff meetings
  • professional learning days
  • webinars
  • the rollout of new initiatives

You’re using some of the important tools that will create impact that endures.

That leaves me with this question for you: How do you or your team ensure full learner engagement in everything you lead?
